The various spaces and functions of Musican are situated around the central part, which includes a cafe, bar, a music hall and smaller spaces for workshops. The design invites music lovers to come along and participate.
Musican fosters interaction and collaborative work and play. The shared spaces enable various musical arrangements to meet, create and play. You can find a computer room, a meeting room and small capsules for individual work.
Professional and amateur musicians can use recording studios and rehearsal rooms at various sizes. I designed the spaces with special attention to the acoustic and to spatial rhythm that are likely to inspire musicians.
I chose to make use of some of the existing characteristics of the original building, in order to preserve the character of the Jaffa neighbourhood. The musical instruments manifest themselves in the design of the centre, the spaces and the interrelations between them resemble musical patterns.
The Musician's House
Musican is an architectural, cultural, community creation, connecting professional musicians, amatuer performers and the audience. It foster creativity of musicians within this environment, and at the same time contributes to the cultural and urban development of the neighbourhood.
We live in a world of sounds, tunes and rhythm. Music is an inseparable part of our lives, and affects us a lot. Music has the special power to make us feel happier, healthier, less lonely. It comforts us during difficult times. Creative musicians and music lovers like to meet, play and create. Many look for a suitable space that would enable them to create, rehearse, be inspired, record and perform for the public. These needs have been met in Musican, the House of Music, which was built in the heart of a gentrified neighbourhood in Jaffa.
